Matching friends and sisters script tattoos
Lettering · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two photographs stacked one above the other, each of a black ink tattoo on skin. The top tattoo spells the word friends and the bottom spells sisters, both in flowing connected script with a looped capital and small heart shapes at the ends of the strokes. The lettering is rotated so the words read upside down, which pairs them as a set, and the skin tone is warm with soft, even lighting.

The forme was already locked when Nell noticed the mistake, and she nearly said nothing. Mrs Ackroyd had ordered two bookplates, one for each of her daughters, and the words were to be set in the looped script Mr Garside kept for christenings: Friends on one, Sisters on the other. Nell had set them both upside down, her hands moving the lead from the wrong side of the stick, and by the time she saw it the ink was already on the rollers.

Mr Garside pulled the first proof, turned it round and held it up to the window over the yard. He said nothing for a long while. Then he laid the second sheet beside it, rotated the other way, and the two words sat one above the other like a pair of hands resting on the same table, each reading from the other's side. The little hearts at the ends of the strokes had fallen into line without anyone meaning them to. 'Leave it,' he said. 'Nobody ever looks at a bookplate the right way up anyway.'
Mrs Ackroyd came in on the Thursday to collect them. Her daughters, she said, had not written to each other since their mother's funeral, and she had a feeling that a book with both their names in it might be opened by the one who had the wrong idea. She unfolded the sheets, turned them once, then again, and laughed the way people do when they have been caught out by something simple.
'They'll have to hold them up to the light to read them,' she said, and tucked both into her handbag. Nell watched the clasp snap shut and thought about the backward letters, and how a mistake, given the right light, can look remarkably like a plan.
