Mother's sweet peas have gone to seed along the back wall, so I have pinched a dozen pods and folded them into this envelope. Don't tell Dad. He still thinks you took the good secateurs to Leeds on purpose, and I have never corrected him.

The hawthorn by the gate has grown the way you always said it would, bent over the path in a loop as if it wants to shake hands with the holly. Last Sunday I stood under it with a cup of tea and tried to remember which of us had cut the gap in the hedge the summer we were nine. It was you, obviously. You had the scissors and the bad idea, and I had the bruise from falling through.

This morning I cut back the new shoots so the postman would not catch his sleeve. I left the loop itself alone. It seemed a shame to undo a thing that had taken so long to grow into its shape, the way we did.
