Matching heart and anchor quote tattoos on forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The left tattoo shows a red heart with grey feathered wings, with the script line "You are the wings keeping my heart in the clouds" written around it. The right tattoo shows a grey anchor with red flukes and a coiled rope, with the script "You are the anchor keeping my feet on the ground" beside it. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with flat red and grey fills, and the two pieces are photographed side by side against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tyre had gone at the forty-mile marker, somewhere past the dry lake, and Nell had been kneeling in the grit for twenty minutes with the jack handle skinning her palm. Ivy sat on the bonnet with her sandals off, peeling the label from a bottle of warm water and reading it aloud as if it were a letter from somewhere better.

'Forty-one miles to Haddon Wells,' she said. 'There's a bus on Thursdays. I looked it up.'

'It's Tuesday.'

'Then I'll walk to Thursday.'

Nell fitted the spare, tightening each nut in a star pattern the way their father had taught them in a car park in Wolverhampton, a lifetime ago. Ivy had a letter in her back pocket from a flight school outside Phoenix, folded so many times the creases had gone soft. She had not mentioned it since the motel in Barstow. Nell had known anyway, the way you feel weather coming in through the bones of your knees.

'You go up, and I'll be down here with the car,' Nell said, and it came out harder than she meant. Ivy slid off the bonnet and stood in the road, heat lifting off the tarmac in sheets. Far to the north a sliver of cloud sat on the ridge, white and absurd. 'I'm not asking you to stay put,' Nell said. 'I'm asking you to tell me the date before you go.'

Ivy laughed, then didn't. She walked round to the driver's side and stood with her hand flat on the roof while the jack ticked down. When the wheel was on and the car settled, Nell found her sister had hooked one bare foot behind the rear bumper, heel against the chrome, the way a kid holds on to a fence. 'Just till the cloud moves,' Ivy said. Nell sat down in the dust beside her and let the sun do what it liked.
