Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms show paired tattoos. The left has a feather with soft purple, green, pink and orange watercolour washes, a few small birds and cursive script running up beside it. The right has a shaded black and grey anchor wrapped in rope above wave lines, with birds in flight and cursive script beneath it.

Her brother Danny had signed on the year before and come home from his first trip with a fulmar feather tucked in his cap band and a plan. He wanted them marked the same way. She said no, then yes, then laughed at herself for needing the second go. They went to a parlour on Hessle Road on a wet Sunday and came out with ink that stung every time a sleeve rubbed against it.

Danny was somewhere up on the wheelhouse deck, hauling in a net, and she knew he would be watching the same bank of cloud she was. The sea had gone the colour of old pewter, with the spray hanging off the rail in grey ropes.
When the whistle went at dusk she carried the first plates up the ladder with one hand, the other locked on the rail. Danny was waiting at the top with his sleeve pushed back and a grin on his face. "Still holding?" he asked. She tapped the plate against his chest and said the pilot had said we'd be in by Thursday. He laughed, took the stew, and the two of them stood in the wind looking at the same flat horizon, neither of them saying which of the pair of them was the anchor.
