Matching heart-frame forest tattoos on forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two heart-shaped tattoos sit side by side on forearms, each with a scalloped yellow and black border. The left heart shows a log cabin with smoke rising beside tall pines and mountains, while the right shows a darker forest and hillside under a crescent moon. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with blue, teal and green tones dominating the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler at the Hollin dance hall had worn his strings thin playing one reel, so when Mae Corrigan came in off the high road asking for the slow air, he played it badly and she did not mind. She stood by the stove with snow melting off her boots and told him that her husband had gone up the mountain in May to fell timber for a cabin.

Aldo had promised smoke from the chimney by harvest, and smoke was what she had watched for every evening since, carrying the lamp up to the ridge where the two valleys met. The pines below the ridge went black by six. Nothing rose from the roofs but the hall's own chimney, and she had begun to hate the sight of it.

The fiddler, whose name was Tobias Grey and who had never once left the valley, said the pass was closed and she would have to sleep on the benches. She did not sleep. Near midnight she took the lamp and climbed, and at the top of the ridge she found a cabin with a cold grate, a loaf gone hard on the table, and a note under the salt pot in Aldo's square hand. Gone to the coast for work. Light the fire when you come. I left the wood cut.

She laid the fire with the split pine he had stacked, struck a match, and sat on the step until the smoke stood up straight in the still air above the trees. Down in the valley the fiddler saw it from the hall door and played the slow air properly for the first time in years, and the moon came out over the mountain as if it had been waiting for the tune.
