Castle scene in a heart on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A heart outline frames a scene of a castle with several towers and pointed roofs on a rocky hill, with a crescent moon and small stars in the sky. The rocks and sky are built from stippled dots, while the castle and heart outline use solid black linework. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on a forearm against a dark background and a striped top.

The ovens at Harrow Lane Bakery were lit by half four, and Mrs Okonedo always said the moon had to be handed over to the bread before it could leave. I was nineteen and did not believe a word of it, but I believed the cold in my fingers. I scored the tops of the tins while the sky above the car park went from ink to the grey of a wet slate roof.

Dad had built me a castle once, out of cardboard and the flour sacks we were not supposed to throw away. It had four towers and one pointed roof that kept caving in. Mum said the stars were just pinholes and I should stop poking them. Now I cut each morning's sheet of dough into a hill shape and stippled it with the back of a spoon, dot by dot, until the rock looked as if it had weather in it.
The night the wind came off the reservoir, the power dipped twice and the oven timer died. I stood in the dark with a torch clamped in my teeth and noticed that the moon in the back window was the only light I trusted. Mrs Okonedo arrived at quarter to five, saw me kneeling by the proving drawer, and said nothing at all. She picked up the peel and pointed at the last tin, the one with a heart scored into its crust.
We ate that heart on the back step while the sky paled behind the bins. The castle on it was a bit lopsided, its towers crooked from my hand shaking. Mrs Okonedo broke it in two and gave me the bigger half. 'Build the next one bigger,' she said, 'and let the roof fall in if it wants to.'
