The tide had been out for three days, which Odile took as a sign the sea was tired of arguing. She walked the drowned car park at Weymouth with a lamp strapped to her wrist, counting the pale lamp posts that still stood like bollards, and she did not look at the water until she reached the old ticket office where the stairs went down.

Something green moved on the third step. Not weed. It turned, a red tail flicked, and a small red star drifted up through the lamplight like a spark let go from a fire. Odile had been told as a child that the sea kept its promises by taking things back, and she had believed it the way children believe in weather.
"You're late," said the mermaid, in the flat, patient voice of someone who has waited on a staircase for a long time. "The gulls had the last of the bread."
Odile sat down on the wet concrete. She had brought a tin of boiled sweets and a letter from her brother, who had left for the mainland the winter the water came in, and she held both out like a bargain. The mermaid read the letter first, tilting it toward the lamp while her hair drifted around her face like ink in milk. Then she folded it into a seam of her hair, took the tin under one arm, and slid back into the dark without a splash. The red star stayed bobbing on the black water long after, as if someone had left a light on for her.
