Sea turtle with plumeria on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A bold black sea turtle with tribal-style patterned markings covers the upper back near the shoulder blade. Four plumeria flowers inside the shell are filled with pink, teal, green and lilac ink, with fine outlines and soft shading. The turtle is centred on the shoulder, and the rest of the back and a bra strap are visible around it.

The reef was still warm when Mere Taeao pushed the outrigger off the sand, and the morning tide had already carried the first plumeria petals out past the break. Her grandson Kahiau sat in the bow with the paddle across his knees, counting the turtles that surfaced to breathe. Four, he said. Five, she corrected, because the old one with the cracked shell always came up last, slow as a deacon, and she had known that turtle since before his mother was born.

They found the net near the drop-off, tangled around a coral head like a wet grey shawl. Kahiau wanted to cut it free with the knife from the tackle box. Mere shook her head and handed him the scissors from her sewing bag instead, because a knife would take a whole flipper with it if the turtle panicked, and she would not have that on her conscience. He worked slowly while she held the bow steady and sang the old line about the tide being a patient aunt. The turtle lay still in the shallows, eyes open, waiting for the last loop to give.
When it was free it did not swim off at once. It turned, lifted its head above the water and looked at them for a long moment, and then it dipped under and left a scatter of pale petals spinning on the surface where it had been. Kahiau laughed and said the turtle had thanked them. Mere said nothing, but she kept one of the petals pressed in the lid of her tin, and she still had it when the boy grew old enough to make his own choices about the sea.
