Matching moth tattoos on two calves

Calf · Mixed · Photo

Two matching moth designs sit on the lower legs, each with a bold black outline, spiral patterns across the wings and rounded eyes. The eyes are filled with orange and yellow on the left and green on the right, while the wings and body use grey shading. The pair is photographed on a wooden floor against a blue background, with the legs cropped at the top of the frame.

Right, sit down, the lot of you. The urn's still warm and I've not finished the one about Miss Pargeter's bicycle. Take your glasses off, Derek, you'll want to see this properly.

Nineteen eighty-one, the summer the boiler went up in the sports hall, the Lark Hill girls used to meet at the back of the science block after lights out. Two of them, Bev Oakes and Nina Cardew, had fallen out over a Walkman and never quite fallen back in. They caught moths in a jam jar with a square of muslin and named them after the teachers. Every night the same two came to the sodium lamp by the bins, the big furry ones with spiral wings, as if someone had dragged a fingertip through wet ash.

Bev swore the one with the amber eyes was her, bright and always going somewhere. Nina said the green-eyed one was the sensible sort, the kind who sits still and waits for the lamp to be switched off. Neither would let the other keep the jar, so it stayed on the windowsill between their two beds, and the moths went round and round the glass until one morning the lid was off, the window was open, and the pair of them were gone.

Look at you both now, tipping your heads like it's the first time you've heard it. I'm not telling you what became of them. I'll only say that somebody in this room has always known exactly where the lamp is.
