Matching neck quotes in serif lettering
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A diptych shows two people photographed from behind, each with a line of black serif text across the back of the neck, one reading you see all my light and the other reading and you love my dark. The lettering is crisp and solid with even spacing, and the ink is set against bare skin, with hair falling above and clothing below. The left image has a bright, warm backdrop with a red and white striped top, while the right has a dark background and a navy top, giving the pair a contrasting composition.

Dear Nell,

The pass shut on Tuesday and nothing has come up it since, not the carrier, not the doctor, not the Henley boys with their sledge. We have eleven guests in the house and a cellar full of Mr Pryce's ale, which he will be sorry to hear has come to us instead of him. Father's lamp still hangs in the front window where he left it, and I trim the wick every evening because the men coming off the fell look for it the way you look for a face in a crowd.
Last night the girl from the Dunmore party asked me why we keep a light burning when the road is dead. I told her the light was never meant for the road. It was for the people still deciding whether to turn back, and that is most people, most nights. She laughed at me, then went quiet, and this morning she was first down to the kitchen with her sleeves rolled, asking where the flour was kept.
I have written you this letter in my head every hour since Tuesday, and most of it was grievance, so I will spare you. What I want to say plainly is that Father would have liked the snow. He always said the dark was only dark to people who had not been out in it long enough to learn its shape. I keep thinking of that when I trim the wick, and of how he never once asked the dark to be kinder to him.
