Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are pressed together, with a script quote split between them: Everyday for the... on one and ...rest of our lives on the other. The lettering is thin, black, and slightly uneven, with simple connected strokes. The photo is warm-toned and close, with the text placed centrally and the hands filling most of the frame.

Mother Greave, who had washed the dead of three parishes and never once been thanked for it, had brought the ink. It was soot and oak gall, stirred in a thimble. "A promise written in one hand is only half a promise," she said, and she took Nell's left wrist and Tom's right and laid them together so the pulse points met. "Say your half as you write it. Don't let him finish yours."

Nell wrote Everyday for the on the soft skin of his wrist, and her hand shook so the e came out like a fishhook. Tom wrote his line on hers, slow and careful, the way he did everything that could not be undone, saying rest of our lives as the nib lifted. The ink stung. Somewhere a dog barked at the bell.

When they stood up, the words sat on their skin in two pieces, neither one complete. Mother Greave wiped the thimble on her apron. "There," she said. "Now you'll have to keep finding each other to read it." Nell turned her wrist and watched the letters move with her pulse, and Tom, who had never been quick with a joke, laughed until the bell stopped.
