Two wrists are shown palms up, each carrying a line of black script lettering. The left reads "Don't make / This easy" and the right reads "I want you / To mean it", with fine, even linework. The black and white photo is taken from a close, slightly angled view that keeps both lines of text sharp and centred.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have the nozzle in one hand and a cold flask in the other when Nessa leans on the bonnet and asks whether you are going to say it or make her wait for the sun to go down. The pump clicks off at twenty-two litres. Beyond the last pylon the road runs ruler-straight into the heat, and the air above it lifts in sheets, so the far-off lorries look like boats.

Two summers ago the pair of you sat in the back room of the laundrette in Dry Fork with your sleeves rolled up while a man with reading glasses on a cord traced your choices onto your skin in soft pencil. Nessa picked her line in under a minute. You took three days, two motel rooms and a phone call to your sister before you let him start. Neither of you has ever asked the other to explain the choice.

You set the flask on the roof and hold out your left hand, palm up, the way you did in the laundrette, so the wrist shows. She turns hers over beside it. Her words sit on the inside of her wrist and yours on the other side, and neither of you can read both at once without the other's arm in the way.

She reads yours aloud, slowly, the way you would read a road sign at speed: 'Don't make this easy.' Then you read hers: 'I want you to mean it.' The sentences only make sense side by side, out here where nothing else is close enough to interrupt, and the sun slides behind the ridge while you both decide who gets to speak next.
