Matching swallow and key tattoos on forearms
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three forearms are shown side by side, each with the same design: a swallow in flight above a cluster of three keys with heart-shaped bows. The outlines are bold and the wings and feathers are shaded in soft greys. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the arms are held together at the wrists against a grey wooden floor and a pink rug.

Hush now, and mind the lamp, because a story told over a flame needs the flame left alone. You asked why the three of them wear birds on their wrists. The birds came first. Swallows were the last thing that could find the way home through the grey dust of the Deep, so every grandmother up here will tell you that a swallow over a key means someone is coming back.

The keys came from a bar of brass that Tessa Wren pulled out of a scrapped lift shaft the year the dome cracked. She filed three of them by hand, each with a heart pressed into the bow so the sisters could tell them apart in the dark. The seed store at the bottom of the valley had three locks, and the rule was that no single person could open it. Three hands, three keys, all turned together. The sisters argued about that rule for a whole winter before they walked down.
They walked for nineteen days. The dust took the youngest's voice and the eldest's left eye, and twice they nearly quit, until the swallows came back out of the haze and circled the same rock three times, which was the sign they had agreed on. On the twentieth morning they stood at the iron door with their wrists pressed together and the keys held between their fingers, and the middle sister said, Now. The locks gave way like old bones. Behind the door the seeds sat sealed in their jars, and the three of them laughed until the birds lifted off their skin and went out over the valley to tell everyone else.
