Matching lotus tattoos on two forearms

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a lotus flower and a looping swirl beneath it. The upper lotus is filled in blue with teal swirls, and the lower one is filled in teal with black swirls. The lines are thin and clean, with the flower petals set against bare skin for contrast, and the two designs are placed in a similar position on each arm.

The lamp at Scarrow Head had been dark for three winters when Nell Penrose came down the cliff path with a can of paraffin under one arm and her sister Ysolt complaining at her heels.

Below the tower, where the tide filled a ring of black rock, grew a lotus nobody had planted. Old Tobias, who kept the light before the war took him, said it opened blue on the ebb and white on the flood, and that its stems wound round the rock the way the current wound round the reef. He said a lamp kept by two hands would never go out. Nobody believed him, and the sisters had come to prove it.

They divided the work the way sisters do. Nell climbed the iron stair with the wick trimmed and the glass polished. Ysolt stayed on the rocks, feeding the pool with fresh water from the tin and singing nonsense to keep her hands warm. By midnight the flower below had opened, blue at the petal tips, and the loops of its stalk ran in spirals across the wet stone exactly where the tide had drawn them.

The fog came in at two. Nell heard a horn out past the reef, a fishing boat she knew by its cracked bell, and she turned the great lens faster than she had ever turned anything. Light swept out over the water and folded back on itself in long curls. Far below, Ysolt looked up and saw her own reflection in the pool, a teal bloom lit from above. The boat came round the point. When the sun rose, the lotus had closed to a pale white shut, and the swirls on the rock stayed wet with the morning.
