Dear Nell, the lock keeper at Hatton has finally agreed to let me use his workshop, so the barge is no longer my only bench. I spent the whole of Tuesday with the seized sluice gear on a tarpaulin, knuckles black with grease, and by evening the jointed plate on the left paddle was turning like it had never rusted. You'd have laughed at me. I kept talking to it, which is what Dad did with the old Bolinder, and I swear the thing answered with a clink.

The Harrowgate boys came down the cut on Thursday with a crate of scrap, offering a deal if I'd fit their new winch. I said I'd think about it, which in this trade means no. What I want is the patched rings on the hand-wheel replaced with proper seals, so the water stops weeping through, and then I'd like to be left alone with the lock beams for a month. The rings on the hand-wheel are the part you'd recognise, the ones Grandad hammered out of old bolt heads. I've kept every one of them in a biscuit tin under the stern bench.

So here's the plan. Come up in August, bring the good spanners and that terrible flask. We'll work the paddle gate together, you on the wheel and me on the pawl, and when the water drops we'll see whether the old joints still close the way they're meant to. I think they will. Everything on this boat folds in the right order when someone patient is holding it.

Write back soon. Tell me if the cat's still sulking about the move.

Love, Mae
