Octopus tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large octopus with a shaded head and curling tentacles covers the inside of a forearm and extends towards the wrist. The work uses fine linework with grey shading to give the body and suckers depth. The ink is entirely black and grey against a light skin tone, with a dark leafy wallpaper and a pale surface in the background.

The master tells you the octopus has three hearts and blood the colour of skimmed milk, and you believe him, because he has never once lied to you about fish. On the morning the kiln is cool enough to open, he hands you a brush of single hair and a pot of black slip made from burnt olive wood, and says the jar will not sell unless its creature looks like it is thinking.

You work from memory of the harbour. Yesterday you watched a fisherman bring up a live one in a basket of weed, and it had turned the colour of the rocks before it had even touched them. You try to get that into the slip. You draw the head first, a round bruise of shadow, then the arms, each one thinning as it reaches for the rim, and at every sucker you lift the brush a fraction so the dot stays small and wet. Your first attempt looks like a dropped rope. The master laughs and scrapes it back with his thumbnail.
By evening you have it. The arms curl inward on themselves in tight, clever spirals, and one tip has slipped free of the others, reaching round the shoulder of the jar as if to test whether the outside world is worth the trouble. The master turns the vessel slowly in his hands and says nothing for a long time.
When the jar goes to market at the next full moon, it sells before the cart has left the yard. You never learn who bought it. Years later, on a quay far to the west, you see a fishwife pouring oil from a jar with a loose black arm running round its belly, and you find that you are reaching out to steady it.
