Mechanical heart with crossed wrenches
Black and grey · Flash
A mechanical heart sits at the centre of the design, with visible gears, pipes and a dial marked MPH, and flames rise from its top. Two open-end spanners cross beneath the heart, with two more spanners above it and wisps of smoke around them. The image uses dense hatching and fine stippled linework in a single muted tan tone on a solid black background, with the motif centred and filling the frame.

Nobody brings a dead engine to Ashby Road after ten at night unless they have already tried everywhere else. Hal Pryce's Bedford came in on the back of a flatbed with its bonnet up and steam curling from the radiator like it had something to confess. I wiped my hands on the rag in my back pocket and told him to leave the keys on the bench.

The trouble was under the manifold, where the timing cover should have been. Someone had fitted a housing the size of a fist, brass gone green at the seams, with gears showing through a cracked glass window and a dial on its face needle stuck at forty. Stamped beneath it were the letters MPH. Dad would have called it nonsense, and then he would have spent an hour staring at it with the lamp pulled close.
I freed the first gear with a drop of oil and a spanner that had belonged to my grandfather, and the whole thing ticked over like a pulse finding its rhythm. The needle swung up to sixty. The Bedford coughed, shuddered, and then ran as smoothly as the day it left the factory in Luton. Hal sat in the cab with his hands on the wheel, not saying anything, and I understood he had been driving it for years without knowing what kept it going.
I filled in the job card before dawn. Under faults found I wrote 'heart seized, cleared'. Under work done I wrote 'keep it oiled'. Then I tucked the card under the wiper blade where he would find it, and watched the needle hold steady in the grey light.
