Black and grey realism tattoo of a melting clock draped over a hand, with the words Lost time is never found, on the side of a person's torso.

Melting clock over a hand on the side

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a melting clock face draped over a shaded hand, with the numerals 12, 1 and 2 and a clock hand visible on the dial. The words LOST TIME IS arch above the design and NEVER FOUND sits below it, both in plain black lettering. The piece is rendered in black and grey with soft shading on the fingers and clock face, and it fills the centre of the frame on a bare patch of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The clockmaker's widow sent the box to the lighthouse keeper's cousin in Harlow, and it came back to us with a note tucked under the lid saying only that the hands had stopped at twelve past one. Nobody in Wendle Cross had ever seen a clock that drooped like that, as if the brass had gone soft in the sun, and yet Aunt Ivy swore the thing had been ticking on her mantelpiece for thirty years before it sagged.

I took it to the bottom of Carrow Lane, where the mill pond keeps its own hours, and sat on the wall with the box open on my knees. The face was warm. When I lifted it out, a hand came with it, grey and cold as a river stone, folded round the rim as though it had been holding the clock up all along and was only now tired of the job. I did not scream. I put the clock on the wall and the hand stayed where it was, fingers spread, the way a man rests his palm on a table while he decides what to say.

I have kept the clock on my own windowsill since. The numerals run a little slower each morning and the hand that holds it has begun to grow a second thumb. Last Tuesday the postman asked me the time and I looked at the dial and told him I could not say, because the lost hours had settled on my own face and I had no way of knowing which of them were mine.
