Script quote on the upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a black script quote, reading I'll never give up on the first line and I'm a fighter on the second, tattooed on the inner upper arm. The lettering uses smooth, flowing strokes with varied thickness, and the ink is solid black with no visible shading. The arm fills most of the frame against a dark background, with a few small red marks near the text.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, because Mrs Pargeter never let anyone stand at the back of her classroom and I'm not starting now. Look at you all, grey at the temples and pretending the car park didn't frighten you. Thirty-one years since Form Four. Some of you have grandchildren who could explain what a fax machine was.

Back then there was a lad called Dennis Okafor, though nobody used his name. They called him Sprout because he had ears like satellite dishes and he drew on everything: desks, bus shelters, the inside of his own school bag. His dad went out before the milk came one winter and didn't come back for a fortnight. Every time the head announced that somebody was being sent home for fees, Sprout would lean across the aisle and say the same thing to whoever was crying in the corner. I'll never give up on you. I'm a fighter, so you'll have to be too.

He wrote it on the bike shed door in red biro, big looping letters, and Mr Hadley the caretaker spent a Saturday painting over them in municipal green. The green held for years. In 2003 they knocked the shed down for a car park, and a man with a crowbar found the words still showing through the paint, faint as a watermark. Mr Hadley kept the panel in his garage. He told me he'd never once painted over anything that mattered after that.

So I'm asking now. Which of you was the one crying in the corner? Don't pretend it wasn't you, Gail, I can see your face going red from here. Sprout's not coming back to say it again, so somebody needs to say it for him.
