Milhouse riding an eagle with banner on a leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon character Milhouse in a green cap and glasses riding on the back of a large eagle with spread wings. A blue banner beneath the eagle carries the words 'Everything's coming up Milhouse' in black capitals and script. The design uses thick black outlines with flat, bold colour in yellow, green, red, orange and blue, set against a soft green background shape.

Dear Aunt Marjorie, You will not believe what has happened at Harrowgate Keep since you left for Scarborough. The eagle that has nested in the broken east tower for three summers finally took a proper interest in our Milhouse, and by Tuesday the pair of them were wheeling over the moat like old friends who had fallen out over a dog.

Milhouse is not a natural rider. He is a natural talker, which the eagle seems to find just as unsettling. Father says the bird picks him because nobody else in the village will sit still long enough to be carried. His green cap has blown off twice and his spectacles once, and he found the spectacles in the bracken with such pure satisfaction that I thought he might weep. He says he has been promised the whole valley if he can keep his seat through a full circuit of the church spire.

On Thursday the eagle took him over the hill to the quarry where the old bell lay in the nettles, and came down so hard on the rocks that the banner it had been carrying slipped from its talons and fluttered into the gorse. We all ran after it. Milhouse was sitting on the bell's rim with his cap in his lap, grinning like a boy who has been handed the keys to the county. "Everything's coming up Milhouse," he said, and the eagle, for the first time in its life, looked embarrassed.

I have tucked the spare spectacles into this envelope for safekeeping, as the eagle has taken to hiding them in the turret. Do not worry about him. He has promised Mother he will keep his feet on the ground at least until Sunday, and the bird has promised nothing at all. Your loving nephew, Edwin
