Phoenix, owl and Hogwarts crest on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo covers the outer thigh, with a red and orange phoenix spreading its wings across the top. Below it, a grey and white owl carries a red envelope, with a banner reading "It's Real For Us" and a Hogwarts school crest at the lower end. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with the phoenix in vivid warm colours against the paler skin.

The owl came down onto the departures board at Ashby Cross just as the 6.40 pulled out, and it did not glance at the timetable. It looked at you. Its feathers were the colour of wet chalk, and it held a red envelope in its feet as carefully as a porter carries a tea tray. You had not expected post on a Tuesday, and certainly not post delivered by a bird with opinions.

The envelope bore your name in green ink and a wax seal the size of a biscuit, a shield split by a silver stag. Inside was a single card. Your place at Greystone Keep School for the Unusual has been held since before your mother was born. Term begins on the platform nobody can find. The phoenix in the boiler room has been waiting to see whether you will come.
You did not go, at first. You folded the card into your coat and walked the length of platform four, past the dead vending machine and the lost property office, to the brick wall at the far end where the paint peels in the shape of a door. The owl rode on your shoulder, warm as a kettle, and the wall did not stop you. Somewhere behind the bricks, a kettle began to sing.
When the 6.40 came back through at midnight, its last carriage was empty except for a red feather on the seat where you would have sat, and a ticket stamped RETURN in orange ink.
