Mischief and managed lettering on forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a single word in black lettering: mischief on the left and managed on the right. Short dash marks sit beside each word, and the lettering has a slightly uneven, hand-drawn look with solid black strokes. The image is black and white, with plain white skin and a soft grey background that keeps the focus on the ink.

The brass key to room seven had gone missing for the third time that week, and Dilys Harrowgate had the look of a woman who knew exactly which of the Fenn sisters had taken it. Nell was on the landing with her boots in one hand, grinning. Ada was already halfway down the back stairs, the key threaded on a bootlace round her neck, humming a hymn she had no business knowing.

The game had started the summer their mother took the night ferry to Ostend and never quite came back on the same timetable. Whatever went astray in Saltcombe House had to be returned by midnight, and whoever did the returning said the words under her breath, the way other families said grace. The first half was the mischief. The second half was the managing. Neither of them had ever explained it to anyone else, which was rather the point.
At breakfast Dilys set the teapot down hard enough to make the spoons jump. Ada slid the key across the tablecloth until it lay beside the marmalade. Nell leaned in and murmured, "Mischief."
Dilys looked at the key, then at the two girls, then at the window where the grey sea was tossing the harbour wall about like a bad tenant. "Managed," she said, not unkindly, and poured three cups, because she had once been a girl on these same stairs with a bootlace of her own. A little light from the water crept across the wood and sat there, a line of small bright dashes, as if the sea had been keeping count.
