Infinity symbol with script wording on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink infinity symbol on the inner forearm, with the words hakuna matata written in flowing cursive inside the loop. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a uniform dark colour. The skin fills most of the frame against a pale green-grey background, with the tattoo placed centrally and clearly in focus.

The 17:42 was running twelve minutes late, which meant the loop line would be late, which meant the rest of the evening would be late too. He wrote it all down in the green ledger anyway. A left glove. A child's shoe with a rabbit on the toe. One cello case, claimed by a man who had cried at the window and then cried again at the bridge.
At quarter past nine a signalman in a wax jacket came in out of the rain, asked for nothing, and sat on the bench under the clock. He watched the departure board flicker and said the loop line had been laid around a field nobody wanted to farm, so the engineers had simply run the track round it and round again. "Always comes back to the same platform," he said. "That's the trick of it. You don't have to chase the train. It finds you."
Wilf shut the ledger. He turned off the lamp above the scarves and listened to the rails hum as the last service swung round the curve, its headlamp sweeping the wet glass like a pencil drawing one unbroken line. He found himself humming the song his nephew sang in the car, the bit about no worries for the rest of your days, and he got the words wrong in the middle and didn't mind.
