Molecular structure tattoo on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line tattoo shows a chemical molecule drawn as a ring structure with a short chain branching from it, with small circles marking the atoms. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading, and the design sits diagonally across the skin. The photograph is cropped below the shoulder and above the wrist, with a plain light background and soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the drawing folded inside the seed tin, the one your grandfather kept for tomatoes that never quite ripened in the north-facing bed. Two rings share a wall, one with a short chain trailing off it like a dropped thread. He called it the happy one and would never say why.

The allotment above the canal sloped toward the water, and in June the bean poles leaned like drunk sentries. You spent that summer watering the bed by the shed while he sat on an upturned crate, pencilling the same shape on the back of a catalogue. Neighbours who never talk, he said, and still know each other's business.

In August the blight took the bed anyway. He didn't curse. He tipped the blackened fruit into the compost heap, wiped his hands on his trousers, and handed you the pencil. Your turn, he said. You made the ring too round, and he laughed until he had to sit down on the crate.

Now the shed smells of creosote and old tomato leaves, and you are the one on the crate. When the sun drops low over the canal, you trace the shape in the dirt with a bamboo cane, press your thumb into each corner where the atoms sit, and leave the short chain pointing at the gate.
