Two matching molecule tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show matching fine line tattoos of molecular structures drawn as thin bonds and hexagonal rings. The left design has a fused ring with a short side chain, while the right shows a single ring with small circles at the ends of its bonds. The black linework is crisp against pale skin, with a dark patterned backdrop behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At half past six the Dover lanes had thinned to a single van and a driver asleep at the wheel, and Ruth Abbott had reached the bottom of her second flask of tea. The envelope on her desk was thin, addressed in blue biro to a laboratory in Leeds, and the form declared its contents as drawings with no commercial value. She slit it open with the blade she kept for parcel tape.

Inside were two sheets of graph paper, each with a single molecule inked in fine black line. The first had a ring fused to a second ring, a short chain trailing off one corner like a question. The second was a lone hexagon with three small circles hung from its edges. Someone had drawn them with a ruler, the angles true to the degree. On the back, in the same hand, was a note: Same bones, different wiring. Keep them apart until the other one clears.

Ruth had seen enough paperwork to know when a drawing was really a letter. She thought of her own mother pinning recipes to the fridge in cramped shorthand, and of how long it had taken her to understand that the squiggles were instructions. She checked the sender's name against the manifest and found it matched the second passenger in the lorry queued behind.

She stamped both sheets, clipped them together, and walked out into the car park where the cab light was still on. Through the open window she held them out. The driver studied the drawings for a long time before he nodded, and Ruth let the wiring cross the border without another word.
