Money rose made from dollar bills on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A rose formed from folded dollar bills fills the forearm, with the word ONE visible on the lower bill and bill edges curling outward at the top. The shading is soft and three-dimensional, with dark grey lines and gradients, and a muted olive and yellow wash on the bills. The three panels show the same arm from front and side angles, with the rose filling most of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The cook off the Seaforth has been paying out in dollars since we left the Faroes, and Ruddy has been folding them into flowers to pass the time. On Tuesday he made a rose from a fistful of greenbacks, the petals curled out at the top as if they wanted off the mess table. Nobody could say where he'd learned it. I think he watched the Norwegian lad fold one on the quay and then lay awake trying to copy it from memory.

I've got two of them in my tin now, one with a crease where I sat on it. The skipper reckons we'll be in by Sunday if the wind holds, and we'll be paid off in pounds, because the Co-op on Harbour Street won't look at a dollar. I told him I'd sooner keep the paper than the cash. He laughed and said it was the most sensible thing a deckhand had said all season.

Ruddy gave his rose to the cook in exchange for the last of the bacon, which tells you about the cook. The rest of us kept ours. Mine has ONE showing on the bottom bill, the way Ruddy showed me, so I know which way up it goes. Hold it under the lamp and you can see the green coming through the yellow where the sea got into the paper.

Put it on the windowsill when I'm home, Nell, with the ONE facing the door. I'll be on the quay by Sunday tea, and I'll want to watch you reading it the right way up.
