Compass and stars on shoulder and upper arm

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two side-by-side photographs show a shaded compass with a black needle star at its centre, set within a circular bezel and surrounded by a swirling ribbon-like form. Five-pointed stars sit around the design, with soft grey gradients giving the ribbon and compass a three-dimensional look. The work is in black and grey only, and the framing shows the shoulder and upper arm against a light tank top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The kingdom of Vell had no coast, so its mapmakers had long ago stopped trusting the sea and started trusting the sky. My master, Oswin Trethowan, kept a brass compass in a cracked leather case, and every morning he tapped its glass twice before he opened the shutters. He said the needle remembered things the stars forgot.

The summer the river Sorrow dried to a seam of cracked clay, the Queen sent for him. She wanted a road drawn across the Salt Flats to the Westward Mountains, where the old wells still held water. Oswin spent three nights over his charts and came down to the kitchen grey in the face. The needle, he said, kept swinging back to the same point in the sky, as if pulled by a ribbon no one could see. He asked me to hold the lamp while he traced it with his finger.

We rode out at dawn with six camels and a dog named Pim. On the third day the wind rose and wrapped the dunes in a silver veil, and I thought we were lost for good. Oswin only laughed, opened the case, and let the needle spin until it settled. We followed it through the veil the way a boat follows a wake, and under the last of the stars we came over a ridge and saw the wells glittering below like dropped coins.

We brought the Queen her water. Oswin never drew the road. He said the needle had only ever been pointing home, and that a map is just a promise that someone else will come back this way.
