Mother and child silhouette tattoo
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a solid black silhouette of a figure holding a smaller child, with the adult's hair flowing into a long curved base that loops back on itself. The edges are smooth and the ink is fully black with no shading or grey tones. The photograph is a close, straight-on view with the tattoo centred on plain skin, and a small mole sits to the left.

The ferryman at Cold Harrow Pass had a rule that no one crossed the high ridge after the first snow without a rope tied to the waist. Wenna Carrow broke it the winter her brother's boots gave out and she had to carry his share of the flour up the zigzag path herself. Halfway up, the wind took her hood and she lost her footing on the scree, and she would have gone over the edge if the rope had not been tied to the goat-post at the bend.

The goat-post belonged to the old widow Marrin, who kept three goats and no husband, and who had strung that rope herself the spring before. She came out in her shawl with a lantern and pulled Wenna back onto the path without a word. Then she looked at the flour sack, looked at Wenna's raw hands, and said that a body could carry only so much before it began to carry the mountain instead.
They walked the rest of the way together, the widow stopping every few yards to let the wind pass. At the top, where the path bends into the valley, Marrin pointed to a long curl of old rope hanging from the rock. It had been knotted and reknotted over many years, and at the loop's end someone had tied a small bundle of wool, a kind of bell, to keep the tie visible in fog. Wenna asked whose it was. Marrin shrugged and said it had belonged to a woman who used to carry her daughter up the pass every market day, and that the daughter had always been the one holding on.
