A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry is already rocking when you reach the slipway, and the boy from the chandlery is shouting that the ramp will lift in four minutes. Your grandmother's oilskin is too big for you, the sleeves folded twice at the wrist, and she has tied the hood under your chin the way she did when you were six. Keep your hand on the rail, she says. The sea does not care who is small.

Out past the breakwater the swell comes in long and grey, and you learn to stand the way she stands, knees loose, weight low, one arm hooked through the rail. A woman on the bench is sick into a paper bag. The child beside her, no older than four, is not frightened at all; she watches the gulls the way you watch a page of sums. When the deck tilts you reach down without thinking and catch the small wrist before it slides, and you feel the bones of it, light as a bird's.

The crossing takes three hours. Somewhere past the halfway mark the cloud splits and a shaft of light lands on the water in a loop, a curved path that bends back on itself like a ribbon tied in a knot. Your grandmother points at it with her chin. That's where the fish are, she says, where the warm water meets the cold. You don't believe her until the mackerel break the surface all along the curve, silver flashes, and the child laughs and pulls against your grip, and you find you are not holding her back at all. You are only leaning towards the light with her.
