Mountain peaks tattoo on wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with a tattoo of jagged mountain peaks at the wrist, extending from the edge of the wrist onto the hand. The peaks are built from bold dark outlines with grey shading and fine horizontal striations across the ridges. The image is in natural colour, with the hand and fingers in the foreground and a grey pavement behind.

Donal Frew never let anyone else take the wheel coming round Skerra Head, not even in a northerly that stripped the paint off the rails. He said the ridge would tell you where you were if you knew how to read it, and he'd point with his cigarette at the teeth of rock above the cliffs, counting them off like a man counting children at the school gate.

That first October I thought he was showing off. I was seventeen, green as the buoys, and the Marigold Rae smelt of diesel and gutted haddock every hour of the day. The ridge was just a jagged line to me, black and grey, with the rain-cut bands running across each peak so it looked more like the pages of an old ledger than a mountain. Donal called them his bookmarks.
The fog came down on the third night, thick enough to swallow the bow from the wheelhouse. Donal had gone below with a fever and left me the boat and his instructions: hold the second tooth on the port side and keep it there. I held it. I could see nothing but grey, so I kept my eyes on the place where that peak should be, until the gulls started crying off the stern and the hard shape came out of the murk exactly where he'd said it would.
When we came in at dawn he was on the quay with his hands in his pockets. He looked at the ridge, then at me, and said it was the first time I'd looked up instead of down. I still steer by it now, though I've never once told him I learned the trick from watching him count the teeth.
