Dolphins and swirls on a wrist
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A pair of dolphins forms a circle with their bodies, enclosed by thin black spiral and swirl lines that extend outwards on both sides. The dolphins are rendered in solid black with grey shading for their bodies and fins, and the linework is bold and smooth. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph of a hand and wrist against a dark green tiled background, with the tattoo centred in the lower half of the frame.

The boat had been out since before light, and Ada Penrose was still counting empty creels on the quay when the dolphins came into the harbour mouth, two of them, nosing the slack water as if they had mislaid something there.

Her brother-in-law Walter swore they were the same pair that had shadowed the Mary Jane all last summer, and that they only came inshore before a bad turn of weather. He said it while coiling rope with his good hand, the other still stiff from the winch that had taken two fingers in March. Nobody on the quay laughed. The water inside the wall had begun to go round in a slow loop, the way it did when the tide could not decide, and the two grey backs rose and fell, each one chasing the other's tail through the same ring.
Ada went down the steps with the mending needle still in her apron pocket. Nobody had told her what to do with the sea at that hour, so she did what her mother had done: she sat on the bottom step and sang the tide-count, the old rhyme with forty-one verses, until the loop of water broke open and the dolphins streamed out past the buoy.
The boat came in on the next swell, low in the water with herring. Walter counted fish into baskets and said nothing more about the dolphins, but he kept glancing at the harbour the way a man looks at a debt he means to pay. By dusk the water lay flat as a dinner plate, and the only ring left on it was the one the first boat had made when it turned for home.
