Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A flash sheet of separate music designs on a white background: a microphone with a looping cable, a pair of headphones with a coiled cable and jack plug, a winged music note, two wavy ribbons of stave lines and notes, a vertical column of treble clefs and notes, and the word Music in scripted lettering. The linework is fine and detailed, with light shading on the headphones and microphone, and the designs are arranged with generous space between them.

Dear Frances, the wireless in the Ashby Road flat has finally given up, so I am writing instead of listening, which you will say is the wrong way round for a man who sells radios. The Saturday dance at the Co-op hall has a new man on the microphone, a boy from Carlisle with a cough and a grin, and he sings as if the notes were loose coins he had found in his coat. Dora says he is trouble. I have listened to him twice from the back by the urn, headphones clamped over my ears on the old set I brought down from the shop, the cable coiled on the floor like a sleeping snake, and I swear the stave lines of the song go up and down the room like a ribbon blown off a line. Every note has its own little wing if you are standing close enough.

I have been thinking about the notes that get away. Mr Pardoe's grandson, I expect, will be whistling something by the weekend that nobody taught him. Please write back and tell me whether the seaside rain in Morecambe is as grey as they say, and whether you still have my records in your case. I will bring the good headphones to the station on Friday, jack plug and all, in case you want to hear what the sea sounds like when someone is singing over it.

Your loving brother, Ray
