Dear Nell,

The bread is proving under a damp tea towel and the oven has been ticking for twenty minutes, so I have the quiet hour to myself, which is the only hour I ever get to write anything. Dan has the van keys and the radio is off because you always said it made the dough nervous. I still switch it off. Some habits are stubborn like that.

Yesterday the man from the chapel brought back the upright you left behind, the one with the sticking B flat. He asked if he could keep the stool. I said yes, and then I sat on it in the back room with flour on my hands, listening to the fridge hum in a key I could never name. It was the first time in six years I thought about your left hand going up and down the scale while I kneaded.

The first batch is out and the crust is crackling the way it does when it cools, like someone turning pages at the back of a church. I have written the orders on the chalkboard in capitals: TWO FOR MRS OKAFOR, ONE CURLED LOAF FOR THE CHOIR HOUSE, sweet cobs for nobody in particular. I kept back the two round ones with the little seeds pressed on top, the ones you called my eyes. I am putting one in the paper bag with this letter so you can tell me if it still tastes the same. Love, Ruth
