Musical staff and treble clef on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A single musical staff with a treble clef and a floating note runs diagonally across the inner wrist and forearm. The linework is thin and black, while soft purple, blue and pink watercolour-style splashes sit over the staff lines on the right. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The ink was wrong from the start, Mrs Varley said. It was a blue-violet bought cheap from a stationer in Bedminster, and Teodor Lusk had no good reason to argue except that he liked it. He was nineteen and paid by the sheet to rule staff lines for the copyists upstairs, a job that asked for a steady hand and no opinions.

The commission was a wedding anthem for a chapel in Clifton, due on the Friday. On the Wednesday afternoon his pen jumped at the bell from the street, and a spatter of violet landed across the fourth and fifth lines like a bird had flown into the page. Mrs Varley wanted the sheet scraped and done again. Teodor asked if he could keep the spoiled copy instead, and she looked at him for so long that he began to apologise, then stopped, because she was already reaching for the treble clef stencil to finish the page properly.

He took the ruined sheet home anyway. The splash had soaked through to the back, so the staff lines showed faintly on both sides, and a pink bloom had spread from the corner where he had started a quaver and given up. On the Sunday, after the anthem was sung, the organist Mr Dacre sent a note asking who had made the copy. He wanted to know what the purple cloud was meant to be.

Teodor wrote back that it was the sound of the choir coming in late, the moment before everyone found the note together. Mr Dacre replied with one line: keep the sheet, the chapel would like it framed.
