Music staff and clef on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm showing curved musical staff lines with a treble clef and a single note in thin black linework. Soft purple, blue and pink ink splashes sit over the staff and clef, with a few fine dots and speckles nearby. The design runs diagonally across the forearm on a plain, pale background.

The 6.12 to Carlisle is late again, so you sit on the bench with your case open and count what the platform has given you. Two pound coins, a bottle cap, a folded bus ticket from somewhere called Penrith. Beyond the edge of the canopy the tracks run off in five bent lines, heat-warped, exactly like the staves Mr Haddow made you copy out in Year Nine until the pencil snapped. You never liked music on paper. It looked too tidy to be true.

Your fiddle is tuned to a tune nobody asked for, the one your nan hummed while she ironed, a slow thing that climbs three notes and then tumbles like a dropped tray. The man in the hi-vis jacket walks past for the third time. He pauses, drops a coin, and tells you the signal is red again, which you already knew, because the light has been bleeding violet across the rails for ten minutes. Dusk comes up through the glass like spilt paint: purple, then a bruised blue, then a pink that catches on the steel and runs.

You play it anyway. The notes come out thin in the cold, but the platform listens, which is more than the timetable ever does. When the signal finally swings to green and the bell clangs, you lift the bow for the last note, the high one you always miss, and you hit it clean. The train groans in. Someone in the third carriage taps the window in time with you.

You close the case slowly, pocket the coins, and leave the bottle cap where it lies. Nobody needs it. Tomorrow you will be back on this bench with the same five lines running off into the dusk and the same stubborn tune waiting to be played.
