Never give up script with roses on shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a tattoo across a person's upper back and shoulder, with a hand resting on the shoulder at the top of the frame. The script lettering reads Never give up and Never back down across the centre, with three shaded roses placed around and below the words. The lettering is bold black linework, and the roses are rendered in soft grey shading on a plain skin tone.

Dolly Marsh and Frank Keogh were not the favourites. He had a bad hip from the docks and she had a laugh you could hear over the brass band, which the judges did not care for. By the third week the room smelled of wet wool and carbolic, and the couples around them had dropped away like leaves. Somebody's sister fainted on Thursday. A tall Scotsman quit on Friday with a sob and a bow.

On the nineteenth night, when the bandleader's lips were split and the drummer was asleep sitting up, a woman in the balcony threw a single red rose onto the floor. It landed by Dolly's heel, petals bruised, and Frank stooped for it with that hip screaming. Never give up, he told her, and he meant the foxtrot, and he meant the rest of it too. They never back down, those two, not once.

They won by four hours. Frank lived another thirty years and never once sat through a waltz, and Dolly kept that rose pressed in her hymn book until the day she died.
