Noodle bowl tattoo on a forearm

Japanese · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo covers the forearm and shows a bowl of noodles with green garnish, red chopsticks and a red patterned band around the bowl. Bold black outlines define the forms, with areas of soft shading in blue, purple and pale cream. Colour ink dominates the composition, and a paracord bracelet with a metal shackle sits across part of the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bowl had been her mother's, and the crack in its rim had been mended with gold thread so long ago that nobody in Hollin Bay could say who had done it. Mira carried it down the harbour steps on the morning of the reunion, wrapped in a tea towel, because the old schoolhouse hall was where they had all once eaten, and she meant to set it on the trestle table beside the sandwiches.

The class of nineteen eighty-one had not agreed on much. Tom Pryce wanted fish and chips. Ruth wanted a cake shaped like the lighthouse. Mira had simply turned up with noodles, the way her mother had served them on wet Thursdays, with spring onion and green soybeans scattered over the top and two red chopsticks laid across the rim. Nobody touched it at first. Then the steam reached the back row, and Tom asked where the broth came from.

She told them the story her mother used to tell. One winter the sea took a fisherman's wife's supper right off the table, and the waves kept it for themselves. So she painted a band of red around every bowl after that, with a pattern like little gates, so the water would know the dish was spoken for and leave the cooks alone. It was a foolish tale and they all knew it. Still, Ruth laughed until she had to wipe her eyes.

By four o'clock the bowl was empty. Ruth took the chopsticks home in her handbag. Tom stood on the steps with his hands in his pockets, asking Mira to write the broth down for him, and when she shook her head he said the sea could have his share of the recipe, since it had already had its fill of the rest of them.
