Black and grey realistic skull tattoo with ornamental shading on an upper arm, photographed at a steep angle.

Realistic skull on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey skull is shaded with soft tonal gradients on the outer arm, with its eye socket and teeth picked out in dark ink. Above it, dense ornamental patterning and blocky, abstract shapes fill the upper part of the composition, with fine hatching in the surrounding areas. The photograph is taken at a steep diagonal under dim, cool lighting, so the skin tone and tattoo contrast are muted.

Tuesday, 03:10. Ward 7 has gone quiet at last, the sort of quiet that means a family has just been sent home from the side room. I have been pushing trolleys down the long corridor since ten, and the lino smells of the same disinfectant it always smells of, sharp enough to find the back of your throat. Mrs Adeyemi in bed four asked me to read her the football results. I did not know any of the scores, so I made them up, and she said Arsenal had a good night, which I think was a kindness to us both.

The porters' room has a skull on the noticeboard that Dev brought up from the anatomy store at the medical school, where he does his Thursdays. Nobody knows whether it is real. It has a chipped front tooth and a dark hollow where the left eye should be, and someone has pinned a sticky note over the jaw that reads DO NOT ASK. At half three I told it about the bleep going off in theatre and how the new lift keeps stopping between floors. It did not argue.

At four the bell from bay two rang, and I went expecting a commode or a glass of water. Instead Mr Okafor was sitting upright with a folded paper in his lap. He had written a list on the back of his discharge form: the lights left on in the chapel, the window opened an inch, a call made to his sister in Leeds before breakfast. Beside each item he had drawn a small tick, the way my gran marked off her shopping. He asked me to take it to the sister, and I said I would, and I meant it.

I pinned the list beside the skull before I went to open the window. Dev will laugh when he sees it. The cold came in smelling of rain and wet pavement, and for a minute the whole ward seemed to breathe with it.
