Nurse owl with stethoscope on a lower leg
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon owl wears a white nurse's cap with a red cross, green-framed glasses and a stethoscope wrapped around its body, with two red hearts and a heartbeat line beside it. The bold black outlines and smooth colour shading in purple, green, teal, yellow and red give it a playful, illustrative look. The design is centred on the calf and sits against bare skin with jeans visible at the top of the frame.

The fox had come in at midnight clutching his tail and swearing the moon had bitten it, so Sister Brannoch Vell listened to his chest with the stethoscope she wore wrapped twice round her body like a scarf. Her green spectacles slid down her beak as she leaned in. Her nurse's cap sat a little crooked, the red cross stitched on by the infirmary's first matron.

'Your heart is going like a drum at a wedding,' she said. 'Which is nothing to be ashamed of, but the moon had no hand in it.' The fox confessed he had run the whole way from the weir after a rumour of a silver pear tree growing there. Above the bed, the heartbeat board scratched its green line across the paper, rising and falling with every breath in the ward. Brannoch tapped the glass with one talon and waited, saying nothing, until the peaks grew shallower.
'Rest,' she told him. 'Then we will go and look at your pear tree together, in daylight, with a lantern and a sensible pair of boots.' The fox sulked, then agreed, and she tucked the blanket under his chin the way she tucked in every frightened creature in the kingdom of Mirrowmere, firmly and without fuss.
When the bell at the weir rang six, the line on the board had settled into long, lazy hills. The fox slept with one paw on his chest. Brannoch sat on the sill with her stethoscope unwound from her shoulders, listening to the town wake up below, and for once she did not need the instrument to hear that everything was steady.
