Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon owl with pink and purple feathers, large blue eyes and a yellow beak sits on a yellow branch decorated with green leaves and daisies. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the feathers are filled with soft shading in pink, lilac and light blue. The tattoo sits centred on the outer thigh, with the owl filling most of the frame.

The hens had been telling everyone that the new owl in the hayloft was a fraud, and by the second week of frost I had decided to prove them right. My feathers were pink, which is no colour for a hunter, and my eyes were so wide that the farmer's boy said I looked permanently surprised. Mind you, I had never once been surprised by a mouse.

Winter on Hollin Farm meant the barn froze from the rafters down. Every night I sat on the yellow branch of the old ash by the gate, the one with the daisies Mrs Gorse had coaxed along the hedge bottom, and watched the kitchen lamp go out one window at a time. The mice were fat and clever. They had worked out that a pink owl makes a loud sigh before she dives, so I learned to hold my breath instead.

On the coldest night, the lamp in the milking shed stayed lit. Something was crying in there, a thin sound like a gate hinge. I flew down through the snow and found a lamb under the straw, too weak to stand, and Tom Fenwick asleep on a bale with his cap over his face. I did not hunt that night. I sat on the shed beam, puffed my pink feathers out to twice their size, and kept my enormous eyes open until the sun came up over the white fields.

By spring the hens had stopped calling me a fraud. They called me the lamp-keeper, which is a far better name for a bird with my eyes, and the lamb, who had grown into a sheep with opinions, still bleats at me from the gate whenever I pass.
