Octopus in top hat with monocle and teacup
Black and grey · Flash
A cartoon-like octopus stands upright in a top hat and round monocle, with one tentacle raised holding a small teacup. The body and tentacles are built from fine stippling, dots and cross-hatched linework that gives gentle shading and texture. The design is shown in black ink on a plain white background, centred and fully visible.

The gentlemen's club on Harrow Lane had never admitted a cephalopod, and Mr Pennock intended to keep it that way until the Thursday the octopus arrived at the front desk with a letter of introduction in a neat, sucker-printed hand. It requested a single table by the window, a pot of Assam, and a quiet corner away from the draught. The porter, a man who had served under three secretaries and one admiral, read the letter twice and then went to fetch the teapot without a word.

The octopus called himself Mr Ambrose Tull, late of the Shipping Exchange, and he took his tea with the care of a surgeon. He lifted the cup on a single curled arm, held it steady with two more, and regarded the other members over the rim of his monocle with an expression of mild and bottomless disappointment. Nobody could decide whether to be offended. Old Captain Greaves, who had once sworn he had seen a sea serpent off Margate, insisted he had known all along and demanded a second cup.
On the last evening of the month, the lamps guttered and the club fell into its usual wheezing hush. Mr Tull set down his cup, unfolded a ledger from beneath his hat, and placed it before Pennock with three tentacles. Every page was in careful ink. Every debt the club had ever forgiven was written there, along with the names of the men who had forgiven them. "I was never here to collect," he said mildly. "Only to be sure someone was keeping count." Then he finished his tea and slipped out into the rain.
