A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The harbour wives of Morrow Cove had a saying about the octopus that lived under the old lighthouse: it took what the sea had forgotten and kept it warm. Nobody believed it until Tamsin Vell's brother went down the slipway one February dusk and did not come up. The lifeboat crew searched until the tide turned, and then they stopped, because the sea does not give back what it wants.

Tamsin went down the next morning with a bucket of pilchards and a boathook her grandfather had carved. The water was the colour of slate. Under the lighthouse steps she found the lair, a cave of mussel shells and drowned bottles, and in its mouth a skull resting on the stones, smooth and white as a cup. Dark tentacles coiled over it like wet rope, their undersides pink and dotted with pale eyes that followed her hand.

She did not reach for the skull. She set the pilchards down and waited, the way her grandmother had taught her to wait for a crab to decide. After a long while one arm lifted, slow as a question, and laid its cold tip against her wrist. Her brother's coat was tangled in the reef beyond, and she could see the grey wool of it moving with the swell.

By the next spring the harbour wives said Tamsin had struck a bargain, though she never told them what she gave. What they did notice was the skull in the window of the lighthouse keeper's cottage, wrapped in a ribbon of blue light whenever the weather turned, and a boy's coat hung on a peg beside it, dry and always warm to the touch.
