Octopus tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large octopus is drawn in bold black outline across the inner upper arm, with its head and eye at the back of the arm and tentacles curling over the elbow. The linework is clean and uniform, with shading limited to fine hatching and sucker detail. The tattoo is in black ink only and fills most of the frame, with a partly visible dark design at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The hatch seals hiss behind you and the pressure gauge drops to a number you no longer trust, so you count the suckers instead, the way your mother taught you when the lamps failed in the drowned ward. Eight arms, each one a corridor of grey rings. Whatever the sea did to the city of Harrowgate Deep, it left the old octopus murals bolted to the flooded plazas, and the one you're working towards has its beak half-swallowed by a fallen crane.

The salvage crew calls it the Doorkeeper. Nobody pays you to meet it, only to take what its arms are holding. Tonight the brass cage clipped to your belt rattles with a ledger of reclaimed tokens, and the cage is warm, which it shouldn't be at this depth.
You kneel on the silt, unclip the cage, and the eye, a slit of dull metal set into the concrete, opens to watch you. You do not look away. Your mentor said the thing you respect never gets your back. So you lay the ledger across the nearest curled tentacle, and it closes around the offering slowly, the way a grandmother takes a cup from a grandchild's hands.
The surface light shows as a faint bruise above you, and you have ten minutes of air left. When you start climbing, the tentacle lets go of the ledger, and something smaller rolls into your palm: a key stamped with a name you recognise as your own. You never learned who wrote that name down. You only learned the sea keeps better records than the council does.
