Olive branch on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single olive branch runs diagonally across the upper arm, with slender leaves and clusters of olives drawn in thin outline. The linework is fine and even, with little or no shading, so the leaves appear open and unfilled. The image is in black ink on light skin against a wooden background, and the wearer's face is not shown.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The galley on the Maris Vell was the size of a confessional, and Teodor fed eleven men out of it on a stove that tilted when the swell came in off Cape Matapan. I had been cook for three weeks when the bosun began leaving olives in my tin cup, one at a time, black and wrinkled from the cask he kept in his locker. He never said where they came from. I never asked. We ate them with bread that had gone hard enough to knock on.

When the cask ran dry in Patras, I went ashore with my tin cup and a fistful of coins and found a grandmother selling branches from a cart behind the harbour wall. She cut one for me with a knife that was older than both of us, wrapped the stalk in newspaper printed in a language I could not read, and said the trees in her village had been drinking the same wind for four hundred years. I paid her double. She laughed and called me a fool who would be back.

I was back, in a sense. That branch rode in my kitbag through two more ports and a fever in Valletta, and when I finally set it on the galley shelf the leaves had gone grey at the edges and the olives were little dried knuckles. Teodor looked at it for a long while and then took a pin from his collar and began to draw. He had no ink, only the soot from the stove mixed with seawater, and he worked the lines so fine I had to lean close to see them. When he was done, the branch looked alive again, its leaves held open to the light, every one of them empty and waiting to be filled.
