Once Upon A Time lettering with vines on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo spells out the words Once Upon A Time in black ink, with an ornate swirling initial O and S and a delicate vine with small leaves running across the lettering. The letterforms are bold and solid, with the vines drawn in finer, lighter linework that sits in contrast to the heavier text. The image is a close, slightly angled shot of the forearm against a blurred warm background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Come closer, the lot of you, and mind the rope, because the tent poles are older than your grandmothers and twice as tired. She sold them by the penny to anyone who could spell their troubles out. An O for the bread that never rose. A vine for the ones who wandered off down the lane and came back changed.

The boy who bought the capital S was called Teddy Marsh, and he swore he could make it work for him. He carried it in his coat for a summer, pressing it against his ribs whenever the big dog at the next pitch came snarling. The letters did not care about his courage, only about the words they were set to make. So he gave them the story he was tired of living, the one where his father never came home from the hop fields, and he waited for the ending to fix itself.

It did not. What fixed it was the vine. Ada had threaded it through every word on purpose, so that nothing stood alone for long, and when Teddy finally laid the trunk open at the back of the Michaelmas fair, the leaves had crept over the A and the T as if they had always meant to be there. He walked home by the long road that night, and the S felt warm against his chest, like a hand he had forgotten was his to hold. Step up, step up, and tell me what you've been carrying.
