Alice in Wonderland motifs on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The design is a set of separate engraved-style vignettes spread across the upper arm: the words We're All Mad Here in a serif typeface, the Mad Hatter in a top hat, the White Rabbit, a large ornate key, Alice and two small birds. The linework is fine with soft hatched shading in greys and black. The motifs are arranged loosely across the arm and the photo is taken from the side against a dark top.

The hatter had pawned the same hat three times that spring, and each time it came back to the counter with a fresh dent where someone had sat on it. I told him so. He only tipped it at me and said the dent was the best part, because it showed the hat had been somewhere.

I keep the ledger at Pilcher and Sons on Broad Street, which has had no sons since 1849 and no Pilcher since the cholera. Most of what comes across the counter is spoons and wedding rings. Then, on a wet Tuesday, a white rabbit came in, checking a pocket watch as though it owed him money, and laid down a key so large it needed both paws. He wanted two shillings on it. I asked what it opened. He said a little door in the wall of the Dean's garden, that he was late, and that he would be back for it by four o'clock, or possibly by Thursday.
A girl in a blue pinafore came in after him, looking for the rabbit and not finding him. She asked me the way out of the shop. I said there was only the one door, and she said that was what everybody said until they found the other. The two plump birds on the bench outside argued about whether a pawnbroker's clerk could be counted as a bird of any sort, and nobody settled it.
That night I tried the key in my own cupboard, the one where I keep the unredeemed things. It turned without any fuss. Inside were a hatter's hat, a girl's blue shoe, and a slip of paper with my own name written on it in a hand I did not recognise. Beneath it, someone had written that we were all mad here, and I have never found a better reason to close the shop early.
