Neo-traditional tattoo of an orange crystal cluster with dark leaves and a stem running down the forearm.

Orange crystal cluster and leaves on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A bold orange crystal cluster sits at the top of the design, with angular facets outlined in black and shaded in warm red and peach tones. Below it, a dark grey stem with thin, curled spikes and several leaves runs down the forearm, with orange highlights at its tip. The photo is taken from above at an angle, with the arm against a grey pavement and a person in dark shorts and brown shoes standing behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The geologist's daughter kept a cabinet of stones in the back room of the chandlery, and every spring she unlocked it to let the light in. Mara had been told never to touch the orange one, the cluster that had come down from the Hebrides in a fishing net, its points bloomed like a fire someone had tried to hold in their hands. Her father said it was only iron in the quartz, nothing to be frightened of. Her grandmother said iron was what the sea took back.

One February gale brought the stem of a black rowan tree up the shingle beach, still rooted in a lump of clay. Mara dragged it home on a sledge and set it in a bucket of seawater on the windowsill, because nobody else would look at it. By the third day the thin curled spikes along the stem had begun to stiffen and turn the colour of wet slate. By the fifth the leaves had opened at the top, and beside them, pushing through the bark like a rumour, sat a cluster of small hard points the colour of the cabinet stone.

She did not tell her father. She carried the bucket down to the lighthouse at dusk, where the keeper's wife let her climb the iron stair to the lamp room. There, with the great lens turning slow above them, Mara set the stem on the sill and watched the beam pass through the crystals and throw them out across the water in long copper bars. Far out, a trawler turned for home. It was the first time she had seen the light do that, and she understood that the stone had been waiting for something to answer it.
