Origami paper boat with watercolour splashes on calf
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black linework origami paper boat sits at the top of the design, with hatched shading on its folds. Below it, blue, magenta, orange and yellow watercolour-style washes spread out, and a thin black line descends to a small anchor at the bottom. The colour is soft and blended against the pale skin, with the boat's outline as the strongest element.

The last good sheet of paper aboard was the one Dad brought back from the print works at Ludlow, the stiff cream kind with a watermark nobody else on the cut wanted. I folded the boat on the cabin step with my tongue between my teeth while the kettle ticked behind me, and Mo watched from the tiller with his arms folded like a foreman. Every crease had to be sharp enough to cut your thumb, he said, or the water would take it.

We launched her at the bottom lock on a grey Saturday, when the lock-keeper was off somewhere with his pipe. Mo had painted the water first, dabbing his aunt's old tin of watercolours onto the paper until the blue ran down the sides and the magenta bloomed where it met the blue. I'd tied a bent nail to a length of cotton thread and knotted the other end through the boat's keel. An anchor, Mo said, so she wouldn't drift off to the Severn without us.
She sat up on the water like she meant it. Then the nail hit the silt and the thread pulled taut, and the paper began to drink. The orange went first, slipping off the hull in threads and then in fat soft clouds that drifted down the line toward the bottom. The yellow followed, pooling where the nail lay in the mud. By the time the boat went soft at the seams, the colours had already run the whole length of the cotton, down into the dark, and Mo was pretending he hadn't been crying about it.
