Dandelion clock with script stem on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black fine-line dandelion clock sits at the lower end of a long diagonal stem that runs up the forearm, and cursive script is written along the stem, though only parts of it are legible. Soft watercolour-style splashes of pink, violet and blue sit behind the seed head and fade outwards. The photograph is taken at an angle against a dark background, with the stem leading the eye from the wrist side up towards the elbow.

Dear Maud,

The dandelions have gone to clock along the cliff path, and I have been doing what you always did, standing at the gate and blowing until my cheeks ached. Father would have called it wasteful. The rock below the light is grey as a slate roof this morning, and the sea has the look it gets before a blow, flat and pleased with itself. I counted sixteen seeds leave one head before I lost them over the wall.
The lamp was trimmed at six, and I climbed the stair twice to check the wick, because the new keeper's boy has been sent back to Penzance with a cough and I am alone with the mantle and the log. Under the gallery rail I found Father's pencil, the stub he sharpened with his knife, and beside it a page of his figures. Forty-one nights of fog. He wrote the wind beside each one, a little arrow like a bird's foot. Nothing about you, and nothing about me, which I suppose is the Trinity House way.
I am writing because the mail boat goes on Thursday, and because I have decided to send you one of the clocks. I have pressed it between the pages of the log so it will arrive without being crushed. Keep the seeds on the sill. When the window is opened they go where they like, and I have found that is the only way I know to let something go properly.
