You inherit the walled garden at Holloway Crest in the wet week of March, with a pair of secateurs that still smell of your grandmother's oil. At the far end, beyond the glasshouse, a yew hedge has been clipped into a coil: a dragon with its wings thrown open, its tail looping under the lawn. Nobody else in the family would touch it. You have been told it is older than the house.

The first autumn you cut back the bramble that had strangled its base and found the spirals hidden beneath, swirls of clipped box worked into the wings, scales of ivy leaf pinned flat in rows. Every cut seemed to ask permission. Your neighbour, Mrs Abara from the allotments, says the dragon sleeps through the winter and wakes when the first swift returns. You tell her that's nonsense, then you find yourself checking the hedge every morning in April.

The swifts come back on a Tuesday. By Thursday the new growth on the left wing has curled outward in a spiral you did not shape, and the tail has lifted a clean inch off the lawn. You stand with the shears in your hand for a long time. Then you put them down on the potting bench, take the old wooden ladder, and climb up to the crest of its back to see what it wants you to leave alone.

At dusk you sit on the bench beside the pond and watch the wings shiver. It does not roar. It only breathes out a smell of cut green and warm earth, the swifts scream overhead, and you understand the garden was never yours to tidy, only to keep.
